A statistical study was carried out on 656 cases with chief complaint of hoarseness seen at the Department of Otolaryngology of Kyungpook National University during the 1960 to July 1969 and the following results weree obtained.
1) Among total out patient of 22, 568 who visited , the Department of OtoIarb with hoarseness numbered to 656 (2.9 %) pYagology the patients
2) Among total of 656 cases, male were 416 and female were 240, the ratio being 1.7 to 1.0. Particularly, with respect to laryngeal cancer, the incidence was extremely high in male, the ratio of male to female being 11 to 1.
3) The underlying diseases causing hoarseness in order of frequency were diphtheria (117 cases, 17. 8%), acute laryngitis (65 cases, 9.9%), laryngeal Polyp (64 cases, 9. 8/0), laryngeal cancer (47 cases, 7.2%), and cause unknown (60 cases, 9. 1%), the last being approached by phoneticals.
4) The highest incidence occurred in the first decade, the next 4th decade (102 cases) and the remaining decade being similiar number. The patients in the first decade were mostly diphtheria.
5) Number of the patients who came to the Hospital within 15 days after the onset of hoarseness were 224 (34.1%) 8 cases had medical attention for the first time 10 years after hoarseness.
